Coral Restoration Recycling Project

Updated: Nov 7, 2020

3rd Grade students completed their unit on Navigating and Utilizing Resources. We kicked off our inquiry-based unit with an image. After some time, students realized that they were looking at a picture of coral. But, where were the fish and why was it white? To help us understand, we took part in a National Geographic Explorer Classroom. Students watched and recorded their questions as Marine Bio-geochemist Emma Camp explained what coral bleaching is and what she was doing to help. By the end, our students had compiled 50 questions they had about coral. Students used Encyclopedia Britannica, Safe Search Engines and our online card catalog Destiny Discover to research their answers.

As a grade, we decided to team up with a coral expert to help us confirm our research and answer a few more of our questions. Marine Biologist Andrew Taylor, Director of Blue Corner Conservation in Nusa Lembongan, Bali graciously offered to help us. He not only answered our students questions but inspired them to take action! After some brainstorming, our students decided to start a school wide recycling program so that they could ensure our school's plastic was not ending up in the oceans and use the deposit money to help purchase coral restoration frames in an effort to grow more coral reefs.
